Finland Trade Balance Swings to Deficit in July

Finland recorded a trade deficit of EUR 735 million in July 2026, compared with a surplus of EUR 1.29 billion in July 2025, according to preliminary data. The balance deteriorated as exports fell 13.8% year-on-year to EUR 6.51 billion. Exports to EU countries increased by 3.8%, and those to non-EU countries rose by 2.2%. Among Finland’s main trading partners, exports to the United States (-66.6%) and Germany (-8.0%) declined, while shipments to Sweden (14.0%) and China (2.0%) grew. At the same time, imports rose 15.7% to EUR 7.24 billion. It should be noted that, as of January 2026, imports from EU countries are compiled using a new methodology, so only aggregate import figures are comparable with those for 2025. Over the first seven months of 2026, Finland registered a trade deficit of EUR 1.71 billion, in contrast to a surplus of EUR 0.62 billion in the same period of 2025.
