The average rate on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage in the US rose to 6.76% as of September 10, 2026, up from 6.71% the previous week. “Aspiring buyers should remember that shopping around for the best mortgage rate and obtaining multiple quotes can potentially save them thousands,” said Sam Khater, chief economist at Freddie Mac. One year earlier, the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6.35%. The average rate on a 15-year fixed-rate mortgage also increased, reaching 6.09%, compared with 6.04% last week and 5.50% a year ago.
