Romania Inflation Rate Drops to 14-Month Low

The annual inflation rate in Romania slowed to 6.2% in August 2026, down from 8.2% in July and slightly below market expectations of 6.3%. This was the lowest rate since June 2025, reflecting a broad-based deceleration in price growth.

Food price inflation eased sharply to 2.6% from 5.0%, driven mainly by lower price increases for milling and bakery products (4.3% vs 7.1% in July), meat and meat products (3.9% vs 6.0%), and milk and dairy products (4.7% vs 6.7%).

Non-food goods inflation also moderated, falling to 6.4% from 7.9% in the previous month. The slowdown was particularly evident in clothing (5.6% vs 6.6%), chemicals (5.7% vs 8.0%), and cultural and sports products (6.5% vs 8.6%).

Services inflation remained elevated but eased to 11.3% from 13.7% a month earlier.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose by 0.2% in August, down from a 0.6% increase in July, indicating a further cooling in price pressures. Meanwhile, the HICP-based annual inflation rate declined to 6.3% in August from 8.2% in July.
