FTSE 100 Rises Ahead BoE

The FTSE 100 rose more than 0.5% on Thursday as investors awaited the Bank of England’s interest-rate decision, following the US Federal Reserve’s move the previous day. The Fed lifted rates by 25 basis points, as widely anticipated, and signalled it expected to raise them again later this year — a stance that drew criticism from President Donald Trump.

Oil prices fell for a second straight session, a development that may help relieve some pressure on UK gilt markets, though trading was expected to remain cautious ahead of the BoE announcement.

Retailer Next led the FTSE 100, climbing more than 2% after it upgraded its full-year guidance, citing a modest improvement in sales expectations and further cost savings, particularly in warehousing. Banks also strengthened, with HSBC Holdings up 1.1% and Barclays gaining 0.9%.

Among other blue-chips, AstraZeneca and GSK each advanced more than 1%, while Unilever added 0.5%. Rolls-Royce rose 2% and British American Tobacco gained 1.4%, providing additional support to the broader market.
