Australia’s Full-Time Employment Slides in August, Erasing July Gains

Australia’s labor market showed signs of cooling in August 2026, as full-time employment declined following a solid gain in the previous month. According to the latest data updated on 24 September 2026, full employment change fell to -6.3K in August, down from a 16.3K increase recorded in July 2026.

The shift from a positive to a negative reading suggests that employers may be turning more cautious after earlier hiring momentum. While July’s 16.3K rise pointed to strengthening conditions, the August decline indicates that some of those gains have been at least partly reversed, raising questions about the durability of Australia’s recent labor market resilience.

Investors and policymakers will likely monitor subsequent releases closely to determine whether August’s contraction is a temporary setback or the beginning of a softer trend in full-time employment.
