Taiwan Stocks Pull Back from Record High

The TAIEX, Taiwan’s benchmark stock index, fell 208 points, or 0.4%, to 47,949 in Thursday morning trading, ending a six-session winning streak as investors took profits after the gauge hit a record high the previous day. The pullback came after the index had notched its first-ever close above 48,000 on Wednesday, finishing at 48,157, and was led by weakness in electronic technology, financials, and health technology shares.

The Electronic Technology subindex slipped 0.4%, reversing part of a 1.2% gain from the prior session. TSMC, the world’s largest contract chipmaker and a heavyweight that accounts for more than 40% of the market’s total capitalization, declined 0.6% after advancing on Wednesday. Among other major tech names, Hon Hai Precision, ASE Technology, and United Microelectronics retreated 2.2%, 0.4%, and 4.1%, respectively.

The broader market also mirrored an overnight pullback on Wall Street, pressured by rising oil prices and higher US Treasury yields. Sentiment was further shaped by anticipation of the upcoming Trump–Xi summit, where investors expect artificial intelligence and tariff policy to be key topics of discussion.
