Thailand Trade Gap Beats Estimates

Thailand’s trade deficit widened to USD 2.48 billion in August 2026, up from USD 1.96 billion a year earlier, marking the eleventh consecutive monthly shortfall. However, the gap was narrower than market expectations of USD 3.9 billion, as import growth continued to outpace exports. Imports jumped 25.1% year-on-year, a marked slowdown from July’s 36.7% surge and below the consensus forecast of 33%, supported by ongoing government stimulus measures designed to bolster consumption and investment. Exports increased 24.3% year-on-year, accelerating from a 21.6% rise in July but coming in just under the projected 24.9%.
