US Mortgage Rates Climb Further in October

As of October 1, 2026, the average rate on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage in the United States rose to 7.28%, up from 7.03% the previous week and 6.34% a year earlier. According to Freddie Mac Chief Economist Sam Khater, the housing market continues to be underpinned by generally favorable economic conditions, even as mortgage rates remain elevated. The average rate on a 15-year fixed-rate mortgage increased to 6.60%, compared with 6.42% the week before.
