NZX 50 Ends 0.2% Lower, Down for 3rd Straight Session

The NZX 50 fell 20 points, or 0.2%, to close at 13,632 on Tuesday, after a flat start to the session. This marked a third consecutive decline and the index’s lowest close since September 16. Losses were led by the energy, materials, and financial sectors.

Market sentiment was cautious ahead of this week’s release of Q3 inflation data, which is expected to influence the Reserve Bank of New Zealand’s next interest rate decision. Investors also kept a close watch on oil prices and broader inflation risks amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, even as Russia loosened some restrictions on energy exports.

A positive session on Wall Street, driven by a rebound in technology stocks, helped limit the downside for the local market.

Notable decliners included Channel Infrastructure (-4.1%), Westpac Banking Corp. (-3.0%), Freightways Group (-2.7%), Mainfreight (-1.9%), Delegat Group (-1.9%), Hallenstein Glasson (-1.2%), and Infratil (-1.0%).
