Hong Kong Stocks Edge Higher

The Hang Seng Index edged up 0.2% to around 23,120 on Thursday, as gains in financial and energy stocks offset declines in technology and manufacturing counters. Sentiment toward the tech sector weakened after Alphabet slumped 10% in after-hours trading on disappointing sales, while Samsung Electronics fell more than 3% after missing profit estimates, rekindling concerns about returns on heavy artificial intelligence investment. By contrast, Microsoft rose 2.8% on stronger cloud revenue, providing some support to global tech sentiment.

Investors also awaited BYD’s third-quarter results, with consensus estimates pointing to net income of 12.1 billion yuan, nearly 55% higher year-on-year from a low comparison base. Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve left interest rates unchanged at 3.75%–4.00%, and ongoing tensions in the Middle East continued to cloud the outlook for inflation and energy prices. Among notable movers, PetroChina gained 3.2%, China Shenhua advanced 3.1%, AIA rose 1.6%, and Genscript Biotech jumped 5.5%.
