The S&P/TSX Composite Index slipped below 36,500 on Thursday, dragged lower by weakness in the mining sector as declining gold prices pressured major producers. Agnico Eagle fell nearly 4%, Wheaton Precious Metals lost almost 3%, and Barrick declined 2%. Several miners released third-quarter results after Wednesday’s close. Kinross and First Quantum both beat profit expectations but still dropped about 6% each, while Alamos missed estimates and sank 8%. In the technology sector, the index was weighed down by mixed earnings from major US companies, with Celestica sliding more than 4.5% and Shopify falling 2%. By contrast, bank stocks advanced as lower oil prices eased inflation worries and reinforced expectations that interest rates will remain elevated for longer. RBC, TD Bank, and BMO each rose more than 0.5%, while Scotiabank and CIBC gained nearly 1%.
