German Import Price Inflation Accelerates to 10.4% in September

Germany’s import prices rose sharply in September 2026, with the Import Price Index climbing 10.4% year-over-year, up from 8.3% in August, according to data updated on 30 October 2026. The figures highlight a notable acceleration in external cost pressures facing Europe’s largest economy.

The year-over-year comparison shows that September’s import prices increased more strongly than in the previous month, when August’s index had already posted a significant 8.3% rise versus a year earlier. This step-up suggests that imported inflationary pressures are intensifying, as the September reading reflects a larger gap between current import costs and those of the same month in the prior year.

The data, measured on a year-over-year basis, indicate that the “actual” figure for September compares prices in September 2026 with September 2025, while the “previous” figure for August compared prices in August 2026 with August 2025. The latest reading may reinforce concerns about cost pressures feeding through to producer and consumer prices in the coming months.
