Italian Retail Sales Growth Cools to 0.1% in September, Signaling Softer Consumer Momentum

Italy’s retail sales growth slowed in September 2026, suggesting a mild cooling in consumer spending momentum as the third quarter closed. Month-over-month retail sales rose 0.1% in September, down from a 0.3% increase recorded in August 2026, according to data updated on 5 November 2026.

The figures show that while Italian consumers continued to spend, the pace of growth moderated compared with the previous month. On a month-over-month basis, the “actual” reading for September reflects a weaker expansion than in August, when sales had grown by 0.3% versus July.

The softer September reading may raise questions about the resilience of household demand heading into the final quarter of the year, as retailers and policymakers watch closely for signs of either stabilization or further loss of momentum in consumer activity.
