German Car Registrations Lose Momentum in October as Growth Cools to 1.7%

Germany’s car market showed a marked slowdown in October 2026, with year-over-year registrations rising just 1.7%, sharply down from a 9.0% increase recorded in September.

According to the latest data updated on 5 November 2026, the October figure reflects a significant cooling in momentum when compared with the same month a year earlier. By contrast, September’s 9.0% year-over-year gain had suggested a stronger rebound in registrations.

The data use a year-over-year comparison, meaning the “previous” reading measures the change in September 2026 versus September 2025, while the “actual” October reading compares October 2026 with October 2025. The sharp deceleration signals that the robust growth seen in late summer has not carried over into the fourth quarter for Germany’s automotive sector.
