Mexico Fixed Investment Rises Below Expectations

Mexico’s gross fixed investment rose 5.7% year-on-year in August 2026, slowing from a 6.6% increase in July and falling short of market expectations of a 6.5% gain. This was the fifth consecutive month of expansion, although at a more moderate pace, as private-sector investment growth eased to 4.8% from 6.7%. In contrast, public-sector investment accelerated sharply, surging 11.1% after a 6.2% increase in the previous month.

Growth in investment in machinery and equipment decelerated to 3.5% from 6.2%, reflecting a continued decline in domestic investment in transport equipment (-1.1%) and a marked slowdown in the growth of foreign capital (5.2% vs 11.5%). Meanwhile, construction investment strengthened, with growth picking up to 7.6% from 7.1%, supported by a 6.4% rise in non-residential construction and an 8.9% increase in residential construction.

Over the first eight months of 2026, gross fixed investment was up 2.2% compared with the same period a year earlier. On a month-on-month basis, however, gross fixed investment declined 1.8% in August.
