Euro Zone Retail Sales Slide 0.7% in September, Reversing August Gains

Euro zone retail sales fell by 0.7% month-on-month in September 2026, reversing the 0.4% growth recorded in August, according to data updated on 06 November 2026. The figures, measured on a month-over-month basis, underscore a renewed weakening in consumer demand across the currency bloc.

The latest reading contrasts sharply with August’s positive momentum, when retail activity had ticked higher compared with July. In September, however, the sector moved back into contraction, with the negative print indicating that consumers spent less than in the previous month.

With the “actual” data comparing September to August, and the “previous” figure comparing August to July, the swing from +0.4% to -0.7% highlights mounting pressure on household spending and raises concerns about the durability of any recovery in euro area consumption heading into the final quarter of 2026.
