XAU/USD, GOLD
Gold (XAU/USD) remains under modest pressure below the $4,500 threshold through Thursday's early European session, yet continues to trade within striking distance of multi-month highs last seen in early June. The recent price behavior reflects a tug-of-war between competing macro catalysts, as some profit-taking emerges following Wednesday's sharp rally toward $4,525. A stabilization in the U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) after its slide to a three-month low has limited immediate upside, influenced partly by hawkish signals embedded in the latest Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting minutes. Nevertheless, a significant retreat in long-dated U.S. Treasury yields continues to reduce the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding bullion, discouraging aggressive short bets. The meeting minutes from the July 28–29 FOMC gathering highlighted that Federal Reserve policymakers remain prepared to resume interest rate hikes if progress on taming inflation stalls. While recent U.S. macroeconomic indicators show moderating monthly price pressures, headline inflation remains above the Fed's 2% target. Furthermore, elevated global energy prices driven by Middle Eastern geopolitical tensions threaten to reignite cost-push inflation. This dynamic ensures that markets keep the probability of at least one further Fed rate tightening step in 2026 active. Geopolitical tensions have intensified after President Donald Trump announced plans for punitive economic measures against Iran, warning of strict financial penalties for any nations assisting Tehran in evading sanctions or bypassing maritime blockades. As the deadlock over critical transit channels like the Strait of Hormuz persists, the embedded war-risk premium provides ongoing underlying support for defensive safe-haven assets.
