USD/JPY

The dollar finished Monday almost exactly where it started against the yen, loitering around 158.36, and it has now spent the better part of a fortnight shuffling between 156.38 and 158.51 without mustering the conviction to escape. That kind of listless drift rarely lasts, and everyone knows what will end it: Wednesday's US inflation report. September's CPI is the single data point capable of unlocking the next leg for USD/JPY, because it feeds directly into how the Federal Reserve calibrates its rate path. Officials have not been shy about their concerns lately, with several warning that price pressures will linger at uncomfortable levels for the foreseeable future. That hawkish chorus has set a high bar for the data. The consensus sees headline inflation climbing to 3.7% year-on-year from August's 3.4%, while core CPI, the measure that strips out food and energy noise, is projected to edge up to 2.5% from 2.4%. Hit those marks, and the argument for another hike sharpens considerably, giving the dollar fresh fuel. Miss them, and the doves get their moment, likely dragging the pair toward the bottom of its recent range. Across the Pacific, the picture is no clearer. Few in the market believe the Bank of Japan is anywhere near raising rates, and Rabobank analysts think the central bank has arrived at an important crossroads, observing that it "now appears to have reached a point where it can shift its focus toward setting its target strength near its target level." But they were careful not to overstate the shift, warning that this does not signal the start of an aggressive tightening campaign, and noting that "even so, the market generally does not consider that it is in a position to continue raising interest rates." That gap between the BOJ's quiet evolution and the market's stubborn disbelief is precisely what keeps the yen subdued, and why USD/JPY has been unable to pick a direction. Until Wednesday's number lands, expect the stalemate to persist.

Let's look at where USD/JPY actually sits on the charts, because the moving averages are quietly doing something interesting. The pair is changing hands near 158.45, and on the hourly timeframe the 50-period average is parked at 158.20 with the 200-period average just below it at 157.95. Both are sitting underneath the current price, which means they are functioning as a cushion rather than a ceiling—stay above 158.20, and the near-term picture stays friendly; drop through it, and sellers get their opening. Zoom out to the four-hour chart and the structure firms up further. The 50-period average reads 158.00, while the 200-period average sits down at 157.15. Price is roughly 45 pips clear of the shorter average and about 130 pips above the longer one, which tells you the broader trend still tilts upward and these averages are layered beneath the market as support, not resistance. The detail worth circling is that the hourly 200-period average (157.95) and the four-hour 50-period average (158.00) have essentially merged into one level. When two averages from different timeframes stack on top of each other like that, it creates a genuinely sturdy floor, and right now that 157.95–158.00 zone is the line that matters most. Now for the levels worth marking on your chart. To the upside, the first obstacle is 158.50, the ceiling of the recent range. Clear that, and 159.00 comes into view as a round-number target, with 159.50 and 160.00 beyond it. Push further and 160.50 and 161.00 enter the conversation. To the downside, the first cushion is 158.00, sitting right on that reinforced confluence. Lose it, and 157.95 comes into play, followed by 157.15, which lines up with the four-hour 200-period average and represents a much deeper demand zone. Below that, 156.40 marks the floor of the two-week range. If USD/JPY stays above 158.00 and manages to clear 158.50, buyers could set their sights on 159.00 and perhaps 159.50. But if selling pressure builds and 158.00 cracks, a slide toward 157.95 and then 157.15 becomes the more likely script.
