The Australian dollar is holding just above the 0.7000 handle, trading near 0.7010 with a marginal 0.04% gain, and its resilience owes more to the dollar's troubles than to any newfound domestic strength. Thursday's trade data did provide a genuine lift, though. Australia's trade position improved dramatically in September, with the surplus widening to A$2.826 billion from a revised A$184 million the month before, a swing large enough to materially change the external accounts picture. Exports rose 2.3% following an upwardly revised 3.1% gain in August, while imports fell 3.3%, reversing the previous month's 6.2% increase. A narrowing import bill alongside firm export growth is precisely the combination that supports a currency, and the Aussie duly benefited. But the domestic policy backdrop has turned less friendly. The Reserve Bank of Australia raised rates and then signalled that future decisions would be more cautious, explicitly noting for the first time since June that it is not committed to a further hike. That single line of guidance trimmed market pricing for a December move and capped how far the currency can climb on its own merits. The other side of the equation is doing more of the work. The dollar has been on the back foot since the midterms, when Democratic gains across both chambers set up the prospect of legislative gridlock, a scenario that complicates budget negotiations and the government funding process, and one that markets have read as dollar-negative. That said, US data has limited how far the greenback can fall. ADP reported 86,000 private-sector jobs added in October, comfortably beating the 69,000 expected, while the ISM services PMI eased only modestly to 54.5 from 54.9 and stayed comfortably above 50, indicating activity remains in expansion. Those prints underline the economy's durability and keep the Fed's tightening path intact, with the CME FedWatch tool showing roughly an 81% probability of a December hike.

AUD/USD is sitting at 0.7000, and the moving averages are arranged in a configuration that is unusually symmetrical and worth reading carefully. On the H4 chart, the 200-period SMA rests at 0.6995 while the 50-period SMA sits at 0.7017. On the H1 chart, that arrangement inverts: the 200-period SMA is at 0.7017 and the 50-period SMA at 0.6996. Read individually rather than as a block, each average does a distinct job. The H4 200-period average at 0.6995 and the H1 50-period average at 0.6996 converge almost exactly, forming a reinforced support shelf just beneath current price, barely four pips away, close enough that any routine dip would test it immediately. Above, the H4 50-period average and the H1 200-period average both read 0.7017, creating an equally tight resistance band roughly 17 pips overhead. That symmetry is the defining feature of this chart: price is pinned between two converged clusters separated by only about 22 pips, which means the averages are offering almost no directional bias at all and the market is effectively coiled. Horizontal support and resistance, read independently of those shifting averages, mark the fixed zones where traders have actually left orders behind. On the downside, the first shelf is 0.6990, followed by 0.6975, then the psychologically significant 0.6950, with 0.6925 marking a deeper demand area. On the upside, resistance begins at 0.7030, then 0.7050, followed by 0.7080 and the round 0.7100 beyond. Two paths are worth mapping. If buyers hold above the 0.6995–0.6996 shelf and push through 0.7017, the pair could extend toward 0.7030, and then 0.7050, and a daily close above the upper convergence would be the first genuine evidence the advance is resuming. If the support shelf gives way, expect a slide toward 0.6990 and then 0.6975, which would leave both upper averages firmly overhead. The bias stays mildly constructive while price holds above the lower cluster, but with only four pips of cushion beneath it and Friday's payrolls looming, the near-term picture rests entirely on whether that thin floor survives.
